7-Day Mt Kilimanjaro Marangu Route (Hut Accommodation)

The 7-day Marangu Route trek is the oldest and most established path to Africa's highest peak, offering permanent hut accommodations and a structured itinerary designed for optimal acclimatization. Trekkers ascend through diverse ecological zones—from rainforest to moorland to the alpine desert—culminating at Uhuru Peak (5,895m). The route is known for its gradual slope but challenging high-altitude climb.

This journey runs for 7 days, 6 nights and features key stages across Arusha, Moshi, Marangu Gate, Mandara Hut, Horombo Hut ....

Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival and Preparation (Arusha/Moshi)

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), clients are transferred to a hotel in Moshi or Arusha. Afternoon/evening briefing with the lead guide covering itinerary, safety, and gear check. Driving/trekking time: 1 hour. Accommodation: Base Hotel (Tulia Boutique Hotel & Spa, Park View Inn).

Day 2

The Rainforest Zone (Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut)

Trek begins from Marangu Gate (1,860m) through dense rainforest to Mandara Hut, encountering unique flora and fauna. Optional side trip to Maundi Crater for panoramic views. Driving/trekking time: 45-60 minutes from Moshi. Accommodation: Mandara Hut (2,715m).

Day 3

The Moorland Zone (Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut)

Trek continues into heath and moorland zone, with clear views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. High-altitude flora such as giant lobelias and groundsels appear. Accommodation: Horombo Hut (3,720m).

Day 4

Acclimatization Day (Horombo Hut)

Active rest day to acclimatize. Short hike to higher elevation and return to Horombo Hut to improve summit success rates. Accommodation: Horombo Hut (3,720m).

Day 5

The Alpine Desert (Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut)

Trek across the barren Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks, reaching Kibo Hut at base of final summit climb. Accommodation: Kibo Hut (4,730m).

Day 6

Summit and Descent (Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut)

Midnight summit push to Gilman's Point and Uhuru Peak. Descent returns to Horombo Hut for overnight stay. Accommodation: Horombo Hut (3,720m).

Day 7

Final Descent and Departure (Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate)

Trek down from Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate through moorland and rainforest. Summit certificates awarded at gate, followed by hotel transfer.
