10-Day Tanzania Safari and Zanzibar Itinerary: Angel’s Complete Day-by-Day Guide
Introduction: Ten Days Is Enough If You Plan with Discipline
Ten days is one of the most requested Tanzania trip lengths I see. It feels long enough to be meaningful, short enough to fit annual leave, and flexible enough to combine safari with Zanzibar. But ten days also creates a dangerous temptation: travellers try to include every famous park, every famous beach and every famous activity.
I am Angel from Warriors of Africa Safari, and my honest advice is that a good ten-day itinerary is about editing. You cannot deeply experience Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro, two Serengeti regions, Stone Town, Nungwi and Paje in ten days. You can visit them, but visiting and experiencing are not the same.
For most first-time travellers, I prefer a focused northern safari followed by four Zanzibar nights. A strong version might include Tarangire, Ngorongoro and Serengeti, then fly from the safari region to Zanzibar. Auric Air currently publishes scheduled Serengeti-Zanzibar connections and a current timetable covering 15 June 2025 through 31 December 2026, but schedules are time-sensitive and must be reconfirmed for actual dates.
This guide gives you several ten-day versions: classic first-time safari, honeymoon, family, migration-focused and shorter-safari/longer-beach. It also explains what I would cut, what I would protect and where many itineraries waste time.
Ten days is not short. It only feels short when the itinerary tries to be fourteen days.

Quick Answer: My Preferred 10-Day Structure
1. Why This Route Works for First-Time Visitors
The route gives three different safari personalities. Tarangire offers baobabs, elephants and a seasonal river system. Ngorongoro offers highlands and the crater. Serengeti offers scale, big cats and the wider migration ecosystem.
TANAPA identifies Tarangire as a major elephant destination and notes the park’s proximity to Arusha. UNESCO describes Serengeti National Park as the heart of the larger ecosystem defined by annual migration. These are not interchangeable experiences, which is why the combination feels varied even within one country.
The route also has a natural direction. You move west and north through the safari circuit instead of repeatedly returning to the same base. At the end, a regional flight can connect the safari with Zanzibar, depending on dates and airstrip.
The main weakness is pace. There are several moves. That is why I would not add Lake Manyara unless it replaces something rather than becoming another stop.
2. Day 1: Arrive and Recover
I strongly prefer a recovery night after an international arrival. Long-haul flights, immigration, luggage and road transfer create more fatigue than travellers expect.
Stay in Arusha or another practical arrival base depending on flight. Use the evening for briefing, luggage organisation and an early night.
This is also the moment to confirm dietary needs, safari start time, domestic flight details and baggage arrangements.
Do not schedule a full cultural tour simply because the day exists on paper. Arrival days need margin.
3. Day 2: Tarangire National Park
Tarangire is a powerful first safari because the landscape is immediately distinctive. Baobabs, riverine habitat and elephants create a different mood from Serengeti.
In the dry season, the Tarangire River is an important wildlife focus. TANAPA’s official park material emphasises the park’s elephants and location about 120 kilometres southwest of Arusha.

A private vehicle is especially useful on the first day because the guide can learn your interests. Some guests want elephants; others are fascinated by birds, photography or simply the feeling of being in the bush.
Stay inside or near the park depending on budget and next-day route. Location matters more than a fancy room with a long detour.
4. Day 3: Tarangire to Ngorongoro Highlands
This should not feel like a wasted transfer day. The route moves through changing landscapes and can include a slower afternoon at the lodge.
I prefer arriving in the highlands with time to rest rather than rushing directly into another full game drive.
For honeymooners, this is a good evening for a special dinner. For families, it is a useful pool or early-bed night.
Choose between crater-rim and highland accommodation based on route, budget and mobility.
5. Day 4: Ngorongoro Crater Safari
Ngorongoro is one of Tanzania’s most dramatic safari landscapes. UNESCO recognises the wider conservation area for exceptional natural and cultural importance and notes that it adjoins Serengeti National Park.
Start early where possible. The crater floor can become busy, and the experience is better when the guide manages timing rather than simply chasing radio calls.
Wildlife can be rewarding, but nothing specific is guaranteed. Black rhino sightings are possible, not promised.
After the drive, return to the highlands or continue only if the onward journey is realistic. A ten-day itinerary should not turn this into a marathon.
6. Day 5: Move to Serengeti
This is where route design becomes seasonal. Central Serengeti is a strong year-round choice for many first-time travellers. Southern or northern areas may be more suitable for specific migration periods.
UNESCO describes Serengeti as the heart of the larger ecosystem defined by annual migration. That scale means “Serengeti” is not one small point on a map.
Road travel can be scenic and allow game viewing en route. Flying can save time in some combinations. Choose based on the actual camp location and budget.
If you arrive by road late in the day, do not expect a full afternoon drive. Honest itineraries count real transfer time.
7. Days 6 and 7: Full Serengeti Days
These two days are the heart of the safari. Keep them flexible. Your guide should respond to wildlife, weather and your interests.

The temptation is to schedule a balloon flight, bush breakfast, full-day drive and sundowner all at once. Choose selectively.
For photographers, a private vehicle is valuable. For families, split drives may be more comfortable. For honeymooners, one slower midday break can protect the romance of the trip.
Do not judge the day only by the Big Five. Serengeti’s behaviour, landscapes and migration context are part of the experience.
8. Day 8: Fly to Zanzibar
A safari-to-island flight can transform the itinerary. Auric Air currently publishes frequent Serengeti-Zanzibar connections and lists approximate direct timings from major Serengeti airstrips, subject to current schedule and actual route.
Remember that the flight is only one part of the day. You still need camp-to-airstrip transfer, check-in, possible stops and Zanzibar airport-to-resort transfer.
Choose the beach area before booking the flight if possible. A far north or southeast resort can add significant road time.
I prefer no major evening activity on arrival. Let the body change rhythm.
9. Day 9: Zanzibar Beach Day
This day should remain open. After seven days of movement, the luxury is not having a schedule.

The Zanzibar Commission for Tourism promotes the islands for beaches, warm tropical waters, coral reefs and marine diversity, while also highlighting culture and adventure.
If you want an activity, choose one that fits the coast: snorkelling, diving, kitesurfing, a spa or a cultural outing.
Do not force an excursion because the package includes it. Rest is a valid travel experience.

11. Alternative 10-Day Itinerary: More Zanzibar, Less Safari
This version is stronger for honeymooners who care equally about safari and beach. I would not add Tarangire simply because it is famous.
12. Migration-Focused Version
If the trip is specifically about the Great Migration, simplify the safari. Use one Serengeti region that matches the season and spend more nights there.
For northern river-crossing season, focus on northern Serengeti rather than adding multiple parks. For calving-focused travel, southern Serengeti and the wider Ndutu area may be more appropriate.
River crossings are never guaranteed. Wildlife movement depends on rainfall and grazing.
A migration-focused ten-day itinerary might use five Serengeti nights and four Zanzibar nights, with arrival logistics around them.
13. Honeymoon Version
For honeymooners, I prefer private guiding, fewer hotel changes and at least four Zanzibar nights where possible.
A romantic version might use Ngorongoro, three or four Serengeti nights and then Kendwa, Matemwe or another quiet beach area.
Add one or two meaningful extras, not seven. A special dinner or balloon safari can be memorable. Constant scheduling is not.
Protect a completely free beach day.
Your honeymoon should have stories, but it should also have silence.
Angel’s honeymoon advice
14. Family Version
Families need realistic drive time. A private vehicle can adapt to bathroom breaks, naps and shorter attention spans.
I often reduce the number of parks for young children. Tarangire and Ngorongoro can be excellent, then Zanzibar.
If Serengeti is essential, consider a flight to reduce long road time where budget allows.
Choose a Zanzibar property based on family rooms, meals, pool safety and beach conditions rather than only star rating.
15. Cost Factors
Compare quotes line by line. Park costs, transfers, domestic flights, drinks and activities may be included differently.
A cheap itinerary can become expensive if it wastes a day and forces last-minute changes.
For a ten-day trip, efficient logistics may be worth paying for because time is the scarce resource.
Ask about exclusions before paying a deposit.

Detailed Planning Notes for a Better 10-Day Journey
A ten-day itinerary becomes much stronger when arrival and departure times are treated as part of the holiday rather than invisible logistics. A traveller landing late in the evening should not be expected to start a long road safari before sunrise the next morning. I prefer to protect the first night, confirm luggage, meet the guide and begin with enough energy to enjoy the first park. The same principle applies at the end: a domestic flight from the bush should not be connected to an international departure with an unsafe margin.
The second important decision is whether to travel mainly by road or use a bush flight. Road travel can be excellent on the northern circuit because it creates a natural route through Tarangire, the highlands and Ngorongoro toward Serengeti. It also lets the guide stay with you across several days. A flight becomes valuable when it removes major backtracking, especially at the end of Serengeti before Zanzibar. The best itinerary often uses both rather than treating one method as automatically superior.
Lodge location deserves more attention than star rating. In Tarangire, a beautiful property far from the area you want to explore can add road time. In Serengeti, the wrong seasonal region can be a much bigger problem. In Zanzibar, a resort can be luxurious but still sit on a coast that does not match your expectations for swimming, nightlife or tides. I always look at the map, transfer time and seasonal purpose before looking at room upgrades.
For a private safari, the daily rhythm can be adjusted. Some couples love full-day drives and picnic lunches. Families may prefer an early drive, a long midday break and a shorter afternoon outing. Photographers may want to remain with one subject for an hour. This flexibility is one reason a private safari can be particularly valuable in a ten-day trip: the itinerary has limited time, so each day should fit the travellers rather than a generic schedule.
Meals and dietary needs should be discussed before arrival. Safari camps are often remote, which means last-minute changes are harder than in a city hotel. Vegetarian, vegan, halal, gluten-free and allergy-related needs can often be supported when communicated early, but the operator and properties need accurate information. On Zanzibar, couples may also want a mix of resort dining and local restaurants, which should influence the chosen beach area.
A ten-day trip also needs realistic laundry planning. Safari can be dusty, and light-aircraft baggage allowances may be more restrictive than international flights. Instead of packing for a fresh outfit every day, ask whether laundry is available at camps and what items are excluded. This can reduce luggage and make the safari-to-Zanzibar flight easier. Keep essential medication, documents and a change of clothes in a small accessible bag.
Connectivity should not be assumed. Some safari camps have Wi-Fi, but coverage can be slow or limited to common areas. For many honeymooners this is a benefit; for remote workers it may be a problem. Decide before travel whether being online is essential. A ten-day trip is short enough that many guests choose to disconnect, but emergency contact arrangements should still be clear.
The beach section should be protected from safari overflow. It is tempting to land in Zanzibar and immediately book a spice tour, Stone Town walk, snorkelling trip, dhow cruise and restaurant reservation. I prefer at least one completely free day. After early mornings and road travel, doing nothing is not wasted time. It is often the moment when the whole journey finally settles.
For families, child age changes the itinerary. A teenager may enjoy long drives and photography; a five-year-old may not. Some activities have age restrictions, and some camps are better suited to children than others. Parents should ask about room layouts, swimming pools, meal flexibility and how guides work with young guests. The best family route may remove one park and add a second beach day.
For senior travellers or guests with mobility needs, ask about vehicle steps, lodge terrain, walking distances, bathroom access and road comfort. A private vehicle can make breaks easier, while a centrally located lodge can reduce daily driving. These details are not minor. They determine whether a luxury itinerary actually feels comfortable.
Finally, build the trip around one or two priority experiences. If the Great Migration is the main dream, give Serengeti enough nights and choose the right region. If elephants are the priority, protect Tarangire. If the honeymoon beach matters most, reduce one safari stop and keep four or five island nights. A ten-day trip becomes outstanding when it knows what matters most.
