Why we use this property
Mbali Mbali Mahale, formerly Kungwe Beach Lodge, is the planned base of our 5-Day Mahale Mountains Chimpanzee Safari. It sits on a secluded beach on the shore of Lake Tanganyika, on the western edge of Mahale Mountains National Park, with the forested mountains rising behind. There are nine en-suite tents: six doubles, two twins and a family tent, with hot water and power around the clock. The main lodge is a thatched lounge and dining area with a mezzanine and a deck over the beach, and there is a fire pit on the sand for the evenings. Chimpanzee trekking is the reason to come; dhow trips, kayaking, catch-and-release fishing, snorkelling, birding, forest walks and village visits fill the rest of the day. Guests fly into the Mahale airstrip and continue by dhow along the shore, about an hour and a half. The lodge opens from June to February, and flights run on set days of the week, which shapes how long you stay. It is also the Mahale base of our 8-Day Katavi and Mahale Luxury Safari and our 10-Day Katavi, Mahale and Lake Tanganyika Safari.
