Overview

This is the Western Circuit itinerary I would use when a client says, 'Give me Tanzania without the crowds.' Katavi gives wilderness, Mahale gives chimpanzees, and Lake Tanganyika gives the soft ending.

AngelWarriors of Africa Safari, Arusha

This 10-Day Katavi, Mahale and Lake Tanganyika Safari is our longest Western Tanzania journey. It joins the remote big-game wilderness of Katavi with chimpanzee trekking in the Mahale Mountains and a slow lakeshore finish on Lake Tanganyika.

Katavi, a national park since 1974, still feels like the old Africa: wide plains, hippo pools and buffalo herds with almost no other vehicles. Mahale is where emerald forest and granite peaks meet palm-fringed beaches on the lake. Together they give safari, primates, mountains, forest and lake in one trip.

It is a specialist trip for travellers who have already seen the Northern Circuit and want something wilder, quieter and more personal. The extra days are its strength: more time in each place, and a buffer for the flights, weather and lake conditions that shape any journey this far west.

The price starts at $10,950 per person sharing, based on Mbali Mbali Katavi and Mbali Mbali Mahale, sister lodges that make the handover between parks simple, with scheduled flights and full board. The luxury version at Chada Katavi and Greystoke Mahale starts from about $13,500. We confirm flights, lodge space, permits, boat transfers and park fees before we quote.

Physical rating

Moderate, level 2 of 3

Easy game drives in Katavi, then chimpanzee treks that can be steep and humid. You need reasonable fitness and steady footing.

  • Treks are on foot through forest, at the pace the chimpanzees set.
  • Some treks are short, others climb for hours; no one knows until you start.
  • Light-aircraft flights and a dhow transfer at each end in Mahale.
  • Days 8 and 9 can be as gentle as you like.

Itinerary detail
  1. Day 1

Dar es Salaam or Arusha to Katavi

    Meals
Lunch and dinner, depending on flight timing

Your extended Western Tanzania safari begins with a light-aircraft flight from Dar es Salaam or Arusha to Katavi, whichever routing works best for your dates. Flights to the west run on set days, so the confirmed schedule shapes the itinerary, not the other way round.

The camp team meets you at the airstrip and drives you to Mbali Mbali Katavi, in the centre of the park, looking over the Katisunga Plains. Depending on the time, the drive itself can bring the first buffalo, giraffe or elephant.

After lunch and a rest there may be an afternoon game drive if the flight lands early enough. The first day stays relaxed: you are moving from travel mode into remote wilderness.

Dinner is served at the lodge. The evening introduces the quiet and space that make Katavi special, slower and more private than any of the busier routes.

  2. Day 2

    A full day in Katavi

    Meals
    Full Board

After breakfast you set out on your first full day in Katavi. Your guide plans the route around the season, the game, the water levels, the tracks and what you most want to see.

Katavi is a remote wilderness, not a predictable circuit. Possible sightings include elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, antelope, hippo, crocodile, lion, leopard, hyena and rich birdlife. Nothing is guaranteed, but the park's space and quiet give every sighting weight.

The day can be a full game drive with a picnic lunch, or a morning and afternoon drive with a rest at the lodge in between. Photographers usually prefer the early starts and the late-afternoon light.

Back at Mbali Mbali Katavi for dinner, the pace feels deep and unhurried: this trip gives you time to understand Katavi, not just pass through.

  3. Day 3

    Tracking and remote wilderness

    Meals
    Full Board

A second full day lets your guide explore different habitats or return to a productive area from yesterday. A longer trip can follow real conditions instead of forcing every highlight into one day.

Floodplains, woodland edges, the Katuma River and open plains can all be part of the route. In the dry season the game concentrates on the last of the water, with hippos crowding the pools; greener months bring softer scenery and excellent birding.

A guided walk can be added where the lodge and park rules allow, at extra cost. Walking rules and fees change, so we confirm them before the final quote.

By the end of the day most guests see Katavi's value. It isn't famous for its crowds; it is special because it feels so far from them.

  4. Day 4

    Your final day in Katavi

    Meals
    Full Board

Your last full day in Katavi follows what has been most rewarding so far: predators for some, elephants, hippos, buffalo, birds or simply the landscape for others.

A slow day is often the best one. Your guide may wait at a productive spot, follow fresh tracks, return to the water or explore a different part of the park. This is where local knowledge counts.

A private vehicle, quoted separately, gives photographers full control over timing, stops and priorities, and this is the day it pays off most.

Enjoy a final dinner in Katavi before the next chapter of the journey: the Mahale Mountains and Lake Tanganyika.

  5. Day 5

Katavi to Mahale and Lake Tanganyika

    Meals
Full Board, depending on transfer timing

After breakfast you transfer to the airstrip for the short flight west to Mahale. This is a key logistics day, and we plan it around the aircraft, the lake and the lodge.

From the Mahale airstrip you continue by dhow along the shore to Mbali Mbali Mahale, about an hour and a half on the water. The contrast is immediate: dry plains give way to forested mountains, white beaches and the deep blue of Lake Tanganyika.

Mahale is a lake, forest and mountain world all at once. You aren't simply moving to another park; you are entering another Tanzania.

The afternoon is for settling in and enjoying the lake, with a briefing on tomorrow's chimpanzee trek and its rules.

  6. Day 6

    Chimpanzee trekking in Mahale

    Meals
    Full Board

Today is for the chimpanzees. After breakfast and a briefing you walk into the forest with the park's guides and rangers. How long and how hard the trek is depends on where the chimpanzees are, the weather and the forest.

A trek is nothing like a game drive. You walk, listen, follow signs and wait for the right moment. When the chimpanzees are found, viewing is tightly regulated to protect them from stress and human illness.

The rules cover health, distance, masks, group size, viewing time, food and drink, noise and flash photography. We confirm the current rules and permit fees before you travel, and the rangers' word is final in the forest.

Afterwards you return to the lodge for lunch and a slow afternoon: the beach, a kayak, a swim where it is safe, or rest beside Lake Tanganyika.

  7. Day 7

A second trek, or the forest and the lake

    Meals
    Full Board

A second full day in Mahale gives room. If the first trek was long or the sighting brief, this is another chance at the chimpanzees, subject to permits, rules and your energy. If it went well, the day can turn to forest walks, the lake and rest.

Mahale shouldn't be rushed. Its beauty is the mix of chimpanzees, mountains, forest trails and the lake: a trek in the morning and the beach in the afternoon.

Kayaking, dhow trips, birding, short walks and catch-and-release fishing where permitted are all possible, depending on the lodge, the lake and the season.

Dinner is on the deck, with another night beside Lake Tanganyika, for many guests the most memorable part of the trip.

  8. Day 8

A slow day on Lake Tanganyika

    Meals
    Full Board

Today is deliberately slow. After flights, game drives and treks, you need time to enjoy the lake properly, and it gives the whole trip a more luxurious rhythm.

Depending on the lodge and the conditions, you can kayak, swim, snorkel, take a dhow along the shore, lie on the beach, photograph the light on the water or take a gentle forest walk. Couples often make it a private lakeshore day.

It is also a quiet buffer. In remote Western Tanzania, spare time takes the pressure off if weather, flights or a trek didn't go to plan earlier in the week.

Enjoy another evening on the lake, with time to take in the journey before the trip home begins.

  9. Day 9

    A flexible lake-and-forest day

    Meals
    Full Board

Your last full day is shaped by the confirmed routing. Usually it is one more relaxed day at Mahale: the beach, the boat, a kayak, photography, or a further trek if permits and rules allow.

On some dates the flight schedule works better with a night in Kigoma, on the lakeshore further north, before the flight home. If so, today becomes a scenic transfer up the lake and an overnight reset, and we tell you before you book.

Either way, the aim is a calm final day rather than a tight, stressful one. For a trip this remote, that buffer is worth having.

Enjoy a final dinner beside Lake Tanganyika.

  10. Day 10

Mahale to Dar es Salaam or Arusha

    Where
    Dar es Salaam or Arusha
    Stay
    No accommodation
    Meals
    Breakfast

After breakfast you leave by dhow for the airstrip, or from Kigoma if you stayed there, and fly back towards Dar es Salaam or Arusha on the confirmed schedule.

Western Tanzania flight logistics can shift, so avoid a tight same-day international connection unless the schedule leaves a safe buffer. A night in Dar es Salaam or Arusha is easy to add.

That is the end of your 10-Day Katavi, Mahale and Lake Tanganyika Safari with Warriors of Africa Safari. From here you can fly home or finish on Zanzibar or Mafia Island.

  2. Mbali Mbali Mahale

Lakeshore tented lodge · Lake Tanganyika, Mahale Mountains National Park · Nights 5–9

On a secluded beach on Lake Tanganyika at the edge of the park, with the mountains rising behind. Formerly Kungwe Beach Lodge, it is the same lodge under a new name, with nine en-suite tents and a thatched lounge over the beach.

Five nights here leave time for two treks and the lake. If the flight schedule calls for a night in Kigoma on Day 9, we tell you before you book. Accommodation is confirmed against season, flights and budget before the final quote.

Prefer a different camp?

The route stays the same; the camps, the price and the feel change. Chada Katavi and Greystoke Mahale, both run by Nomad, make the luxury version, from about $13,500; Katavi Wildlife Camp is the alternative in Katavi. The brief's Kungwe Beach Lodge is Mbali Mbali Mahale under its former name.

Useful tips

Pack soft and light
Light aircraft carry soft-sided bags only, within strict limits on weight and shape. We confirm the exact allowance with your flights.
The flights set the dates
Scheduled flights to Katavi and Mahale run on set days of the week, which is why the trip is ten days and why Day 9 stays flexible.
Don't trek if you're unwell
Chimpanzees catch human illnesses easily. If you have a cold, flu or a fever, you won't be allowed to trek, so tell your guide.
Follow the chimpanzee rules
Keep your distance, wear a mask when asked, don't eat or drink near the chimpanzees, keep your voice low and never use flash. The rangers' instructions come first.
Bring trekking shoes
Mahale's trails are steep, rooty and sometimes slippery. Broken-in shoes with good grip, long trousers and a light rain layer make the treks far easier.
Check ages for families
Chimpanzee trekking has a minimum age, and some camps have their own limits. We confirm the current rules before booking any family.
Leave a buffer at the end
Western Tanzania schedules can change. Avoid a tight international connection on Day 10; a night in Dar es Salaam or Arusha is the safe buffer.
Tips aren't included
Gratuities for guides, trackers, boat crews and lodge staff aren't part of the price, so set a little aside for them.

When to go

June to October is the strongest window. Katavi's dry season concentrates wildlife on the river and the last pools, and Mahale's forest trails are at their driest.

November to February is greener and quieter, with good birding and soft light, but Katavi's camps begin closing from November; we confirm what is operating first.

March to May is the wet season, when access, trekking and lake transfers are affected and most Western Tanzania camps are closed.

Questions guests ask

Why choose the 10-day version instead of the 8-day Katavi and Mahale safari?

It gives more breathing room: an extra day in Katavi, more time on the lake and a stronger buffer for flights and weather. It suits guests who don't want to rush Western Tanzania.

Is this a luxury safari?

Yes. Remote flights, few lodges, lake transfers, specialist guiding and chimpanzee trekking make it a premium trip. The starting price is based on the two Mbali Mbali lodges; Chada Katavi and Greystoke Mahale make the luxury version.

Are chimpanzee sightings guaranteed?

No. Chimpanzees are wild and move freely through the forest. Two trekking days and spare lake days improve your chances, but sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Can first-time safari travellers book this?

Yes, if you understand it is remote, specialist Tanzania. First-time guests who want the famous highlights may prefer the Northern Circuit first.

What wildlife can I see in Katavi?

Possible sightings include elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, antelope, hippo, crocodile, lion, leopard, hyena and many bird species. Sightings are natural and cannot be guaranteed.

How difficult is Mahale chimpanzee trekking?

It varies with the chimpanzees' movements, the forest and the weather. Some treks are short, others climb for hours on steep, humid trails, so you need reasonable fitness and good walking shoes.

Can this safari end in Zanzibar?

Yes. Zanzibar or Mafia Island can follow the safari; we quote the routing and beach stay separately.

Are activities private or shared?

That depends on the lodge. Most remote camps run scheduled shared activities unless a private vehicle, boat or guide is booked.

What luggage should I bring?

Soft-sided bags only. Light aircraft have strict limits on weight and bag shape, which we confirm with the airline for your flights.
