5-Day Mahale Mountains Chimpanzee Safari
Wild chimpanzees in the forest, Lake Tanganyika at the door, four nights in remote Western Tanzania
Overview
Mahale is not for travellers who want a quick checklist safari. It is for travellers who want to slow down, walk into the forest and feel Tanzania in a very different way.
This 5-Day Mahale Mountains Chimpanzee Safari is a focused journey to Western Tanzania, built around one of the country’s rarest wildlife experiences: trekking wild chimpanzees in the forests above Lake Tanganyika. It is shorter than a Katavi and Mahale combination, so it suits travellers who want Mahale but not eight or ten days.
Mahale is not a normal safari destination. There are no savannah game drives. Instead the days combine forest trekking, primate behaviour, lake scenery, mountains and beach. The park is where emerald forest, granite peaks and palm-fringed beaches meet Lake Tanganyika, and it is one of the best places in Africa to watch chimpanzees in their natural habitat.
It is a specialist journey, not a budget one. Getting there takes domestic flights and a boat transfer, the lodges are few, and trekking follows park rules and fees. So the final price is confirmed only after we check flight schedules, lodge rates, park fees and permits for your dates.
The price starts at $5,950 per person sharing, for two guests on scheduled flights with four nights at the lakeshore lodge. It suits couples, honeymooners, photographers and repeat safari travellers who want Tanzania beyond the northern circuit.

Physical rating
Moderate, level 2 of 3
Chimpanzee treks can be steep and humid. You need reasonable fitness and steady footing.
- Treks are on foot through forest, at the pace the chimpanzees set.
- Some treks are short, others climb for hours; no one knows until you start.
- Light aircraft and a boat transfer at each end.
- Days 3 and 4 can be as gentle as you like.
Where the trip goes
One flight in, one flight out, from Arusha or Dar es Salaam depending on the routing for your dates. The last leg is by boat along the lakeshore, and everything in between happens on foot or on the water.
ArushaDay 1 · Day 5
One of the two starting points. The flight routing for your dates decides which one you use.
Dar es SalaamDay 1 · Day 5
The other starting point, and a good place for a buffer night before an international flight.

Day by day
Day 1
Arusha or Dar es Salaam to Mahale
Your journey begins with a domestic flight from Arusha or Dar es Salaam, whichever routing works best for your dates. Mahale is remote, so flight days and luggage limits are confirmed before you book. Travel with soft-sided bags and pack light for the small aircraft.
From the Mahale airstrip you continue by dhow along the shore of Lake Tanganyika to Mbali Mbali Mahale, about an hour and a half on the water. The arrival is part of the experience: the lake, the mountains and the forest set a mood quite unlike a classic safari.
At the lodge you check in, have lunch or refreshments depending on the time, and settle into the quiet rhythm of Mahale. The afternoon is kept relaxed after the flight and the transfer.
Spend the evening by the lake, with the forested mountains behind you and the beach fire pit lit. Your guide briefs you on the chimpanzee trekking rules and the plan for the next day.
Day 2
Chimpanzee trekking in Mahale Mountains National Park
After breakfast you set out on your first chimpanzee trek, with authorised guides and rangers and under park rules designed to protect both you and the chimpanzees. The pace, distance and difficulty depend on where the chimps are moving.
This is a very different wildlife experience from a vehicle safari. You walk, listen, wait and follow signs in the forest. The excitement builds slowly, and when the chimpanzees are found the moment can be powerful, because you are watching them in their own world.
The rules matter: keep your distance, wear a mask when asked, don’t trek if you are unwell, don’t eat or drink near the chimps, and respect the limits on group size and viewing time. Your guide confirms the current rules and fees before you go.
After the trek you return to the lodge for lunch and a slower afternoon beside the lake. Depending on the day you can swim where it is safe, kayak, relax on the beach or take a short boat trip. That balance of forest and lake is what makes Mahale special.
Day 3
A second chimpanzee trek, or the forest and the lake
Today is your second chance at the chimpanzees. If the first trek was hard going or the sighting was brief, this day gives you room. If it was excellent, a second trek still adds depth, because no two encounters are the same.
The morning can hold another trek, subject to permits, park rules, your fitness and the lodge’s arrangements. If you would rather take a gentler day, there are forest walks, photography, time on the lake, or simply rest.
Mahale is not only about primates. It is mountains rising straight out of the lake, light through the forest, birds along the shore, and the feeling of being far from Tanzania’s main routes.
The afternoon is yours: the beach, a kayak, a swim where it is safe and permitted, or a quiet evening watching the light change over Lake Tanganyika.
Day 4
A flexible day on Lake Tanganyika
Your last full day is deliberately flexible, because a remote trip should not feel rushed. Some guests take one more trek if permits, rules and energy allow. Others rest, enjoy the lake and let the place breathe.
The choice can include a forest walk, kayaking, a dhow trip, catch-and-release fishing where permitted, birding, snorkelling, beach time or photography. What is possible depends on the lodge, the lake, the season and park rules, so we confirm it rather than promise it.
For couples and honeymooners this becomes the soft, romantic chapter. After the effort of trekking, a slow day on the lakeshore feels like a hidden beach escape inside a wilderness safari.
Enjoy a final dinner at the lodge: the forest behind you, Lake Tanganyika in front of you, and a sense of Tanzania very few travellers reach.
Day 5
Mahale to Arusha or Dar es Salaam
After breakfast you leave Mbali Mbali Mahale by dhow for the airstrip and fly back towards Arusha or Dar es Salaam, depending on the routing for your dates.
Western Tanzania logistics can be sensitive, so avoid a tight same-day international connection unless the confirmed flight schedule leaves a safe buffer. A night in Dar es Salaam or Arusha is easy to add.
That is the end of your 5-Day Mahale Mountains Chimpanzee Safari with Warriors of Africa Safari. From here you can fly home, connect to Zanzibar, or join another safari route in Tanzania.
Where you’ll sleep
Mbali Mbali Mahale
Your base for all four nights, on a secluded beach on Lake Tanganyika at the edge of the park, with the mountains rising behind. Formerly Kungwe Beach Lodge, it is the same lodge under a new name.
Nine en-suite tents, a thatched lounge and dining area over the beach, and a fire pit on the sand. The trekking starts from the lodge, and the lake fills the rest of the day.
Accommodation is confirmed against seasonal availability, flight routing and your budget. If the lodge is full for your dates, we propose a property of comparable standard before the final quote.

Mahale has only a handful of lodges. Greystoke Mahale is the luxury alternative and quotes above the starting price. The brief’s Kungwe Beach Lodge is Mbali Mbali Mahale under its former name.

Useful tips
- Pack soft and light
- Mahale is reached by light aircraft, so luggage needs to be soft-sided and within the airline’s weight limit. We confirm the current allowance with your flights.
- Flights set the length of stay
- Scheduled flights to Mahale run on set days of the week, so the number of nights follows the schedule. We build your dates around the real flight days.
- Follow the chimpanzee rules
- The park sets the rules to protect the chimps: keep the required distance, wear a mask when asked, never trek if you are unwell, don’t eat or drink near them, keep your voice low and never use flash. Group size and viewing time are limited.
- Leave room before flying home
- Western Tanzania logistics can shift. Avoid a tight same-day international connection; a night in Dar es Salaam or Arusha is the safe buffer.
- Bring proper walking shoes
- Forest trails can be steep, root-tangled and slippery after rain. Shoes with grip matter more than anything else you pack.
- Tips aren’t included
- Gratuities for guides, trackers, boat crew and lodge staff aren’t part of the price, so set a little aside for them.
- Bring insurance details
- Travel insurance isn’t included. Keep your policy details with you, printed and on your phone.
- Ask your doctor about malaria
- Discuss malaria prevention with your doctor before you travel, and bring insect repellent for the forest and the evenings.

When to go
June to October is the strongest general window. It is the drier period, trekking conditions are often at their best, and it is the most popular time to go.
November to March brings greener forest, a quieter atmosphere and clearer lake views. It suits flexible travellers, and we confirm conditions and lodge opening with you. April and May are the wettest months, when many lodges close.
Whatever the month, the chimpanzees are wild and the forest changes. Trekking time and viewing quality vary, sightings are never guaranteed, and how hard the walk is depends on where the chimps are moving.
Questions guests ask
Is Mahale worth visiting?
Yes, if you want chimpanzee trekking, Lake Tanganyika and a corner of Tanzania very few travellers reach. It is not a game-drive safari, so come for the forest and the lake rather than the Big Five.
Are chimpanzee sightings guaranteed?
No. The chimpanzees are wild and move through the forest as they choose. Good guides and more than one trekking day improve your chances, but no one can promise a sighting.
How difficult is chimpanzee trekking in Mahale?
It varies with where the chimpanzees are. Some treks are short; others are steep, humid forest walks. You need reasonable fitness and good walking shoes, and the guides set the pace.
How many chimpanzee treks are included?
The trip is built around trekking on Days 2 and 3, with Day 4 kept flexible. The exact number of treks included depends on permits, park rules and the lodge, and we confirm it on your quote.
Can children join chimpanzee trekking?
Chimpanzee trekking has age and health restrictions set by the park. If you are travelling as a family, we confirm the current rules before you book.
Why is Mahale expensive?
It is remote, the accommodation is limited, and getting there takes domestic flights and a boat transfer, as well as specialist trekking arrangements. Those costs are what make it pricier than a drive-in safari.
Can I combine Mahale with Katavi?
Yes. Adding Katavi turns this into a full Western Tanzania safari, with big-game wildlife alongside the chimpanzee trekking.
Can I add Zanzibar after Mahale?
Yes. Zanzibar works well as a beach finish. The flights and the beach stay are quoted separately.
What should I pack?
Soft-sided luggage for the light aircraft, comfortable trekking shoes, breathable clothing, a light rain layer, insect repellent, sun protection, swimwear and any personal medication.
