Why we use this property
Udzungwa Forest Lodge, known locally as Hondo Hondo, Swahili for hornbill, is the Udzungwa base of our 5-Day Mikumi and Udzungwa Mountains Safari. It sits in green grounds in the Kilombero valley, right on the border of the Udzungwa Mountains National Park near Mang'ula, with views into the forest canopy. Six en-suite forest tents stand along the forest edge, furnished in coconut wood and bamboo, with throws woven by the Ifakara Women Weavers and open-air bathrooms with solar-heated rain showers; there are also simpler traditional bandas on a hill and camping. Power and hot water are all solar. Red colobus and other primates live in the forest, and hornbills fly in to roost every evening at sunset. The lodge arranges guided hikes with packed lunches, from short strolls to Sanje Waterfalls and multi-day treks with porters and camping gear.
