5-Day Mikumi and Udzungwa Mountains Safari
Game drives on the Mkata plains, then forest trails and waterfalls in the Udzungwa Mountains, by road from Dar es Salaam
Overview
This is a smart Southern Circuit starter package. Mikumi gives wildlife, Udzungwa gives movement and scenery, and the route stays practical from Dar es Salaam.
This 5-Day Mikumi and Udzungwa Mountains Safari is for travellers who want Southern Tanzania with a bit of everything: classic game drives, then mountain forest, waterfalls and real walking. It starts and ends in Dar es Salaam, travelling inland to Mikumi National Park for wildlife and on to Udzungwa Mountains National Park for hiking.
Mikumi is one of the most practical parks on the Southern Circuit. It is reachable by road from Dar es Salaam, works well for shorter trips, and its open Mkata plains make for easy game viewing. It is Tanzania's fourth-largest national park, and it borders Nyerere to the south.
Udzungwa is something else entirely. Part of the Eastern Arc Mountains, it is explored on foot: forest trails, Sanje Waterfalls and mountain views, with primates such as the Udzungwa red colobus that live nowhere else on earth. It pairs naturally with Mikumi for active travellers.
The price starts at $1,950 per person sharing, for two guests in a private vehicle at the comfort level. It is a value-led, varied alternative to the northern circuit, and we tell you plainly what it is and isn't before you book.

Right for you if you are…
- Active travellers
- Game drives and hiking to waterfalls in one trip.
- Value-minded travellers
- More affordable than fly-in Southern Circuit trips.
- Dar es Salaam guests
- Starts and ends in the city, no flights needed.
- Families with older children
- Wildlife plus a forest adventure they can handle.
- Couples
- Plenty of variety without being long or expensive.
- Repeat Tanzania travellers
- A side of the country the northern circuit doesn't show.
Physical rating
Moderate, level 2 of 3
Long road days at each end and a steep forest hike. Fine for most active travellers.
- Game drives in Mikumi are seated, in a private vehicle.
- The Sanje Waterfalls trail is short but steep, in heat and humidity.
- Day 4 can be as gentle or as hard as you like.
- Days 1 and 5 are mostly on the road.
Where the trip goes
A loop out of Dar es Salaam and back by road: west to Mikumi's plains, south to the Udzungwa foothills at Mang'ula, then home. Two nights in each place, so nothing feels like a transfer stop.

Day by day
Day 1
Dar es Salaam to Mikumi National Park
Your driver-guide meets you at your hotel, residence or the airport in Dar es Salaam, and after a short briefing you set off by road for Mikumi. It is a big travel day, but also a good introduction to the changing landscapes, towns and rural life of southern Tanzania.
Traffic, road conditions and comfort stops all affect the timing, so the day is not overloaded. The goal is to arrive safely, settle in, and get a first taste of the park if the light allows.
If there is time, an afternoon game drive on the open plains gives you your first sightings. Mikumi's accessible grasslands make it an easy introduction for guests short on time who still want a real safari atmosphere.
By evening you check in at Vuma Hills Tented Camp, on the wooded hills above the Mkata plains. Dinner is at the camp, and the evening is yours to rest after the road.
Day 2
Full-day game drive in Mikumi National Park
After breakfast you head out for a full day in Mikumi. An early start is worth it: the mornings are cooler and the animals more active. Your guide picks the routes from recent sightings, road conditions and the season.
The open landscapes make game viewing easier than in dense woodland. You may see elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffalo, wildebeest, impala, hippos at the pools, lions and many birds. Wildlife is natural and never guaranteed, but Mikumi is a rewarding park for a short safari.
A packed lunch keeps you out on the plains for more of the day instead of returning early to camp.
In the afternoon you explore other habitats before returning to Vuma Hills for dinner. The second night here is what makes this a proper wildlife safari rather than a stop on the road.
Day 3
Mikumi to the Udzungwa Mountains
After breakfast you leave Mikumi for the Udzungwa Mountains. The scenery changes from open plains to forested mountains, and that contrast is the strength of the trip.
In the Udzungwa area you set out on a guided hike, depending on timing, weather and your fitness. The best-known walk climbs to Sanje Waterfalls; the short route is well maintained but steep, with a viewpoint halfway and pools at the top that are good for a swim.
Your guide chooses the route with you on the day and in line with current park guidance. Wear proper walking shoes and carry plenty of water.
Afterwards you check in at Udzungwa Forest Lodge, Hondo Hondo, on the forest edge near Mang'ula. As the light fades, hornbills fly in to roost in the trees around camp.
For Udzungwa, comfort and footwear matter. This is an active safari day, not a vehicle-only game drive.

Udzungwa at your own pace
Today is for enjoying Udzungwa more slowly. Depending on your energy and interests, it can hold another guided trail, a waterfall viewpoint, a forest walk looking for primates and birds, or something gentler near the lodge.
Udzungwa is not a game-drive park. Its value is the forest, the biodiversity, the walking and the waterfalls, and that is worth knowing before you come.
Active guests can take on a longer trail where permitted and safe; others can keep to shorter walks, rest and the views. That flexibility is what makes the trip work for couples and families with older children.
The evening is your last in the south, a calm night at the lodge before the drive back to Dar es Salaam.
Day 5
Udzungwa to Dar es Salaam
After breakfast you check out of Udzungwa Forest Lodge and begin the long drive back to Dar es Salaam, with time built in for traffic, comfort stops and road conditions.
Your driver-guide drops you at your hotel, residence or the airport. If you have an international flight the same day, we check the timing carefully, because southern road transfers can be delayed.
That is the end of your 5-Day Mikumi and Udzungwa Mountains Safari with Warriors of Africa Safari: wildlife, mountains and waterfalls on one practical route.
Where you’ll sleep
Vuma Hills Tented Camp
Your Mikumi base, on wooded hills in the south-west of the park, looking over the Mkata plains. Tents stand on wooden decks under thatch, with a pool for the hot middle of the day.
Two nights here make Mikumi a real safari: an arrival drive, then a full day on the plains.

Your base for the mountains, right on the national park's border near Mang'ula, with views into the forest canopy. Six en-suite tents along the forest edge, solar power and open-air showers.
The lodge knows the trails well and packs lunches for hiking days, from Sanje Waterfalls to longer routes.
Exact accommodation depends on availability, season and your budget. If a camp is full, we propose one of comparable standard before the final quote.

Prefer to travel higher?
Mikumi and Udzungwa don't have the deep luxury range of the northern parks, and the trip is honest about that. In Mikumi, Stanley's Kopje, Vuma Hills' sister camp on a kopje above the Mkata plains, is the upgrade.

Useful tips
- Shoes and water for Udzungwa
- The hike to Sanje Waterfalls climbs steeply through the forest. Shoes with grip and plenty of water matter more than anything else you pack.
- Bring swimwear
- The pools at the top of Sanje Waterfalls are good for a swim on a hot day, so pack swimwear in your daypack.
- Road days need margin
- The drives from Dar es Salaam and back depend on traffic and road conditions. We plan them with comfort stops and a realistic buffer.
- Don't fly out the same evening
- If you have an international flight on Day 5, tell us the time. A night in Dar es Salaam is the safest way to remove the pressure.
- Udzungwa is a walking park
- There are no game drives in Udzungwa. Its rewards are forest, waterfalls, primates and birds, so come ready to walk.
- Tips aren't included
- Gratuities for your driver-guide, park guides and lodge staff aren't part of the price, so set a little aside for them.
- Bring insurance details
- Travel insurance isn't included. Keep your policy details with you, printed and on your phone.
- Ask your doctor about malaria
- Discuss malaria prevention with your doctor before you travel, and bring insect repellent for the forest and the evenings.

When to go
June to October is the strongest general window. The roads are more predictable, game viewing in Mikumi is easier, and the Udzungwa trails are drier and more comfortable to hike.
November to March is greener and quieter, good for birdlife, photography and flexible travellers.
April and May are the wettest months, when roads and trails can be difficult. We confirm lodge operations, trail safety and road conditions before we confirm a date.
Questions guests ask
Is 5 days enough for Mikumi and Udzungwa?
Yes. Five days covers the drive from Dar es Salaam, proper game driving in Mikumi and at least one good hiking day in Udzungwa. If you want a slower pace, add a night in either place.
Is this safari good for first-time visitors?
Yes, especially if you are starting in Dar es Salaam and want a practical introduction to Southern Tanzania. It is different from the Serengeti, so we make sure you know what to expect before you book.
Is Udzungwa a wildlife safari park?
Not in the game-drive sense. Udzungwa is a hiking and forest park: trails, waterfalls, mountain views and rare primates such as the Udzungwa red colobus. Mikumi is where the vehicle safari happens.
Can children join this itinerary?
Yes, older children usually love the mix of wildlife and hiking. We choose a trail that suits the family rather than an overambitious one.
How difficult is the Udzungwa hike?
It depends on the trail, the weather and your fitness. The short route to the top of Sanje Waterfalls is well maintained but steep, especially in the heat, so bring good shoes and plenty of water. We confirm the right route with you before travel.
What wildlife can I see in Mikumi?
Possible sightings include elephants, giraffes, buffalo, zebras, wildebeest, impala and other antelope, hippos, lions and over 400 bird species. Wildlife is natural and sightings cannot be guaranteed.
Can this package include Zanzibar?
Yes. Zanzibar can be added after you return to Dar es Salaam, by ferry or flight depending on your timing and budget.
Is this package private or shared?
Private, with your own vehicle and driver-guide for the whole trip.
What should I pack?
Light safari clothing, comfortable hiking shoes with grip, swimwear for the waterfall pools, sun protection, insect repellent, a rain jacket in the wetter months, a reusable water bottle and a small daypack for Udzungwa.
How much does this safari cost?
From $1,950 per person sharing for the comfort version, for two guests in a private vehicle. The final price depends on your dates, the camps, current park fees and anything you change.
