4-Day Nyerere National Park Safari with Boat Safari
Game drives and a Rufiji boat safari in Southern Tanzania, by road from Dar es Salaam
Overview
For the Southern Circuit I prefer this four-day version over the three-day one when the guest has the time. The extra night makes the safari feel calmer and more complete.
This 4-Day Nyerere National Park Safari with Boat Safari is the stronger, calmer version of a short Southern Circuit trip from Dar es Salaam. It gives you more breathing room than a three-day safari, and it starts and ends in the city, so it suits guests already staying there, business travellers with a few free days and anyone adding the mainland to a Zanzibar holiday.
Nyerere feels different from the busy northern parks. The landscape is miombo woodland, open plains, floodplains and the braided channels of the Rufiji River. It was carved from the Selous landscape and is known for river safaris, where boat trips can show you hippos, crocodiles, elephants and birdlife from the water.
The four days are balanced on purpose. Day 1 is the road transfer and arrival, Day 2 is a full-day game drive, Day 3 is the boat safari with extra wildlife time, and Day 4 is the journey back. That is enough to feel that you have visited Nyerere rather than touched its edge.
The price starts at $1,900 per person sharing, for two guests in a private vehicle at the comfort level. What you pay depends on your dates, party size, the lodge, park fees and anything you change, and we confirm it in a line-item quote.

Right for you if you are…

Physical rating
Moderate, level 2 of 3
A long road transfer at each end and early starts. Fine for most travellers in reasonable health.
- Game drives are seated, in a private safari vehicle.
- Days 1 and 4 are mostly spent on the road between Dar es Salaam and Nyerere.
- The boat safari is taken seated on the water; your lodge sets the boat and the timing.
- Expect early starts on the full game-drive day.
Where the trip goes
Out of Dar es Salaam and back by road. The first day is the transfer, the second is a full day on land, the third is on the water, and the fourth is the drive home. Everything happens around one base, so nothing is packed up and moved.

Day by day
Day 1
Dar es Salaam to the Nyerere area
Your Southern Tanzania safari begins in Dar es Salaam, where your driver-guide meets you at your hotel, residence or the airport. After a short briefing and luggage check, you set off toward the Nyerere area. The road is part of the experience: it carries you from the rhythm of a coastal city into quieter safari country.
The drive passes rural towns and villages and the scenery changes as you go. Travel time depends on traffic, road conditions, the lodge’s location and the season, so the day is planned with patience and realistic timing, with comfort stops along the way.
On arrival you check in at Africa Safari Selous, just outside Mtemere gate, and have lunch or refreshments depending on the time. The rest of the afternoon is deliberately easy: a swim in one of the lodge’s two pools, a drink at the bar overlooking its waterhole, or simply rest after the journey.
Dinner is in the lodge’s restaurant, where your guide talks through the next day’s full game drive so you know when to wake, what to pack and how the day will flow.
Day 2
Full-day game drive in Nyerere National Park
After breakfast you set out for a full day in Nyerere National Park, the main land-based day of the trip. Mtemere gate is minutes from the lodge, so the drive in is short. An early start is recommended: mornings are cooler, wildlife may be more active and the light is better for photography.
Your guide chooses routes from the season, recent wildlife movement and road conditions. Nyerere’s habitats include woodland, riverine areas, open plains, floodplains and water systems that draw animals in. You may see elephants, giraffes, buffalo, zebras, wildebeest, impalas, hippos, crocodiles, lions, hyenas and a wide range of birds, and with luck African wild dogs, one of the special predators of the south.
A packed lunch keeps you out in the park instead of returning to the lodge early. That matters here: Nyerere is large, and the feeling of safari comes from exploring patiently rather than hurrying between short sightings. Your guide picks a safe place to stop before the afternoon drive.
By late afternoon you return to Africa Safari Selous for dinner and the day’s stories. With another full night still ahead, the evening feels less pressured than on a shorter package.
Day 3
Boat safari on the Rufiji and relaxed safari time
Today gives the trip its strongest Southern Circuit character. After breakfast you go out on a boat safari on the Rufiji River system or nearby water channels, depending on the river and the lodge’s operating arrangements. Africa Safari Selous sits about 3 km from the Rufiji, so the boat is a short drive from your room. It is one of the most distinctive reasons to choose Nyerere over many short northern safaris.
From the water the pace changes. Instead of driving across the landscape you move gently through river scenery, watching reflections, bird activity and animals at the bank. Hippos, crocodiles and waterbirds are often the focus.
Depending on timing, the boat safari may run in the morning or the late afternoon, and a late-afternoon trip can be especially atmospheric as the light softens over the river. If the boat trip is shorter, the rest of the day can hold a relaxed game drive, lodge time or, where suitable, a community or nature activity.
This day is not meant to be overloaded. The value is variety: one full day by vehicle, one day on the river, and time to enjoy the lodge. For many guests the boat safari is the memory that makes Nyerere feel different.
Day 4
Nyerere to Dar es Salaam
After breakfast you check out of Africa Safari Selous and begin the drive back to Dar es Salaam. The departure time is arranged around the lodge, the road and your onward plans; if you have an evening flight, the schedule includes a sensible road and traffic buffer.
The drive gives you time to reflect on the safari as you move from the wilderness back to the coast. Your guide arranges comfort stops and drops you at your hotel, residence or the airport.
That is the end of your 4-Day Nyerere National Park Safari with Boat Safari with Warriors of Africa Safari. If you are continuing to Zanzibar, the ferry, flight or hotel can be added as a separate extension.
Where you’ll sleep
Africa Safari Selous
Your base for all three nights, just outside Mtemere, the park’s main gate, and a short drive from the Rufiji. Staying beside the gate keeps the road from Dar es Salaam manageable and puts the park minutes away on the full game-drive day.
This is the comfort level the price from $1,900 per person sharing is built on. Selous River Camp, a family-run mud-hut camp on the river nearby, is the same level if you prefer it; the camps below show the upgrades.
Exact accommodation depends on availability, season and your budget. If your first choice is full, we propose a property of comparable standard before the final quote.

Prefer a different camp?
The route stays the same; the camp, the price and the feel change. Selous River Camp is the same comfort level, Rufiji River Camp a step up, and the last four are the luxury upgrades. The luxury camps sit deeper in the park and are usually reached by air.

Useful tips
- Day 1 is a transfer day
- The road from Dar es Salaam to the Nyerere area is part of the trip, not a detour. Traffic, road conditions and your lodge’s location all change the time, so we plan it with a margin and comfort stops.
- Leave a buffer on the way home
- If you fly out of Dar es Salaam on Day 4, tell us your flight time before we plan the departure. The return drive needs a sensible road and traffic buffer, and a hotel night in Dar is an easy way to remove the pressure.
- The boat safari follows the lodge
- Whether it runs in the morning or the late afternoon depends on your lodge and its operating arrangements. A late-afternoon trip is often the most atmospheric, with softer light over the river.
- Check the season
- June to October is the safest general recommendation. April and May are the wetter months, when some access and lodge operations can be affected, so we confirm road conditions and lodge opening with you.
- Pack for the river
- A hat, sun protection and a layer for the water in the early morning matter more than you would expect. Binoculars are worth bringing for the birdlife.
- Tips aren’t included
- Gratuities for your driver-guide and lodge staff aren’t part of the price, so set a little aside for them.
- Bring insurance details
- Travel insurance isn’t included. Keep your policy details with you, printed and on your phone.
- Keep printed copies
- Phones run flat and signal can be patchy in the park. A printed itinerary, visa approval and insurance details help at every gate and check-in.
- Ask your doctor about malaria
- Discuss malaria prevention with your doctor before you travel, and bring insect repellent for the evenings.

When to go
June to October is the strongest general period for first-time guests. The drier conditions make wildlife easier to see near water, and road conditions tend to be more predictable.
November to March is green and quieter, good for birdlife and photography and for flexible travellers who enjoy landscapes and fewer crowds.
April and May are the wetter months. Some access and lodge operations may be affected, so we check road conditions and lodge opening carefully before we confirm a date.
Questions guests ask
Is 4 days enough for Nyerere National Park?
Yes. Four days allows an arrival day, a full-day game drive, a boat safari day and the return journey without feeling as rushed as a three-day itinerary.
Is the boat safari included?
Yes, the recommended version includes it. The final quote confirms the exact arrangement, timing and whether the lodge or an operator provides it.
How long is the drive from Dar es Salaam to Nyerere?
It depends on traffic, road conditions, your lodge’s location and the season. Plan Day 1 as a transfer day with realistic timing and comfort stops, and we will give you a time for your lodge when we confirm it.
What wildlife can I see in Nyerere?
Possible sightings include elephants, giraffes, buffalo, zebras, impalas, wildebeest, hippos, crocodiles, lions, hyenas, African wild dogs and many bird species. Wildlife is natural and cannot be guaranteed.
Is this safari private?
Yes. The recommended product is private, with your own vehicle and driver-guide. Shared options may be possible later, but a private service gives you more comfort and flexibility.
Can this safari start from Zanzibar?
Yes, but it needs separate flight, ferry or transfer arrangements, so we price that version separately because the cost structure changes.
Is Nyerere good for families?
Yes, especially for families with older children. Choose comfortable accommodation, and consider adding one extra night for a slower pace.
Should I choose 3 days or 4 days?
Choose three days if time is very limited. Choose four if you want a better balance of road transfer, game drive and boat safari without rushing.
Can I upgrade the lodge?
Yes. The same route can be sold at comfort, upper-mid or luxury level, depending on the lodge and the season.
Can I combine this with Zanzibar?
Yes. The safari starts and ends near Dar es Salaam, so the coast connection is simpler than from many inland routes. Ferry, flight and hotel arrangements are added as a separate extension.
